Subcultures refer to groups within a larger society that share distinct values, aesthetics, behaviours, or practices. Examples include music-based subcultures (e.g., emo, punk, goth), hobby communities (e.g., cosplay, gaming, skating), lifestyle or fashion aesthetics, and certain online communities.
Gatekeeping refers to practices used by members of a subculture to restrict or regulate who can be considered a “real” or legitimate member of that group. This may include enforcing norms, controlling access to spaces, requiring specific knowledge or participation, or challenging those seen as “poseurs” or harmful to the culture."
